Thailand's sugar output is expected to rise 10% to 11 million tonnes in 2017/18, a top official of Thai firm Buriram Sugar said on Friday, according to Reuters.

"Production will go up because of higher acreage as some farmers have switched to sugar cane from rice," Buriram Sugar's Deputy Managing Director, Pattarapong Pongsawasdi, told reporters on the sidelines of a sugar conference in New Delhi.

He said Thailand is expected to export 8 million tonnes of the sweetener in 2017/18, compared with an estimated 7-7.3 million tonnes in 2016/17.

Thailand's sugar consumption in 2017/18 is expected to remain flat at 2.65 million tonnes, said Pongsawasdi.
