Union workers at American Crystal Sugar company have accepted a new contract, according to South Dakota's KFGO news.
The employees voted Thursday on the proposal that includes pay hikes of 3% for the first four years and a 2.75% increase in the final year. Also included is a US$2,250-per-employee signing bonus if the contract was approved before May 22nd.
Both sides made it clear they wanted to avoid another lockout of workers like the one in 2011 that lasted nearly two years.
Around 1,300 employees of the Moorhead-based cooperative in the Red River Valley, southern Minnesota and northern Iowa voted on the offer.
The union's current contract runs out at the end of July.
