India is expected to produce more sugar than earlier estimates suggested. However, this is more likely to result in increased ethanol diversion rather than exports.
With improved sugar supply prospects, New Delhi may allow the sale of ethanol from sugarcane juice and B-heavy molasses produced before the feedstock restrictions were imposed in Dec 2023. As a result, the actual ethanol diversion in the current marketing season would be 2.5 million tonnes including 1.7 million tonnes already permitted by the government.
