Sugaronline India Report – Worsening feedstock shortage for the Indian sugar and ethanol industry

A severe shortage of cane-based feedstock has prompted New Delhi to incentivise multi-feedstock distilleries for ethanol production. However, with crude oil prices moderating and sugar prices strengthening, mills are likely to allocate more cane toward sugar production, expecting better realisation from the sweetener.

Cane crushing is expected to conclude by the end of March in most parts of India due to a severe shortage of cane, except in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Millers in the state of Maharashtra have ended their crushing operations. Lower crop yields and limited cane availability have shortened the crushing period in Maharashtra
